Zahava Szsz Stessel is the author of Wine and Thorns in Tokay Valley, Jewish Life in Hungary: The History of Abajsznt (FDUP, 1995). She has given papers at international conferences and her articles on the Holocaust have appeared in English, Hungarian, and Israeli publications. Dr. Stessel and her sister were teenage prisoners in Auschwitz and assigned to factory work in Markkleeberg, Germany even though they could hardly reach the machines. In her return visits, Dr. Stessel spoke with groups of students and addressed the audience at the unveiling of a memorial at the former camp site. Her biography is part of a traveling exhibit, "The Forgotten Women of Buchenwald." Dr. Stessel is a retired librarian of The New York Public Library. She received her PhD from New York University.
