Summary:This comprehensive list of Antarctic expeditions includes details of all expeditions for purposes of exploration, scientific research, whaling, sealing and tourism, to the Antarctic continent and islands of the Southern Ocean, as well as lists of international laws and treaties relating to Antarctica, details of the Antarctic operations of various countries, a brief history of exploration and of Antarctic industries, as well as an extensive bibliography and index by expedition name, personal name, ship, location and organization. Revised edition of material in Antarctic pilot (1958) and Polar record (1958).

Originally published in 1989, this book lists Antarctic expeditions and related historical events from ancient times to the time of publication. With 3342 entries, covering the period from 700 BC to 1988, it is a completely revised and expanded version of a list complied by Dr Brian Roberts and first published in 1958. The addition of maps, references and an index containing approximately 27,000 entries greatly improved the quality and accessibility of the information. The region covered is the far south in general and the Antarctic in particular, including all areas covered by the Antarctic Treaty. The book will be of interest to polar, maritime and science historians and professionals concerned with all aspects of the Antartic.
